NAPLES, Fla. - Governor Rick Scott's controversial decision to purge the voter registration list using driver's license records has yielded results in Collier County.
"Collier County has 27 individuals that were identified as potential non-citizens," said Tim Durham, Chief Deputy for the Supervisor of Elections Office in Collier County.
Of the 27, 4 were found to be non U.S. citizens and removed from the list, although, they were actually voted in an election.
So far, one person has come forward and provided proof that she is indeed a citizen and eligible to vote.
The Supervisor of Elections Office is still waiting to hear back from the remaining voters, who will have to provide proof or be removed from the list.
But it's how the names are being selected that's drawing concern.
"A database through driving record and through that database there's determination based on citizenship."
Critics contend the information can be out of date and targets college students, members of the military, people who move around a lot and senior citizens, most of whom are democrat.
"Along with everything that's going on, it just seems like its targeting certain groups of people," said Mickey Gargen, chair of the Collier Co. Democrats.
In Ft. Lauderdale and US citizen and WW II veteran was one of those flagged for removal.
"I voted in Brooklyn when I lived in Brooklyn," a 91-year-old veteran who was targeted as a potential non-citizen. "I really don't understand it. To me it's like an insult."
In Collier County, a woman who was on the purge list was found to be a US citizen and removed after providing proof.
The Department of Justice warned against the purging citing a law that forbids such activity 90 before an election.
Meantime, local democrats say this move by the governor is more about politics and less about fair voting.
"That's just part of the voting suppression that the republicans have been working on," said Gargan.
