Walker's firing downplayed in Edison SACS response?

CREATED Apr. 18, 2012

FORT MYERS - Edison State College is laying out its case to keep its accreditation.

After being slapped with 14 violations last November - including a finding the college lacked integrity - the college released their response.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, or SACS, will decide in June if the college should be sanctioned.

As a result of the SACS findings, the college says they have taken a number of steps to address each violation.

That includes personnel matters. But some faculty members are upset that in the report's summary former president Dr. Ken Walker isn't mentioned by name.

Instead there is an offhand mention that the "district president" was terminated.

"The Board terminated the employment of the College’s Vice President for Academic Affairs as well as its District President," the summary says.

The report does specifically highlight several personnel actions including the retirement of Bill Roshon who was linked to the nursing and course swapping scandals and the firing of Vice President of Instruction Bob Beeson.

"I think it's infuriating that this report has gone in this way," said Edison English professor Pamela Mangene. "People who should be blamed haven't been blamed. People who shouldn't be blamed are being blamed."

The college says Walker's firing is mentioned but a spokesperson didn't know why his name wasn't included or more prominently highlighted.

In the summary the college specifically highlighted the following personnel actions that have occurred:

  • Dean, Professional and Technical Studies, Bill Roshon, retired Oct. 31, 2011.
  • Associate Dean, Professional and Technical Studies, Dennette Foy resigned Nov. 2, 2011.
  • Vice President for Instruction and Dean, Arts and Sciences, Robert Beeson terminated for cause on Nov. 29, 2011.
  • Associate Registrar, Ray Medhurst, retired March 21, 2012.
