Cape Coral fire department celebrates 50 years
CAPE CORAL - Fifty years ago, Cape Coral residents discussed the need for a fire department.
That was back in 1962. Now, more than a half century later, the fire department has grown to 10 stations with 175 firefighters.
"On behalf of all the firefighters that are currently working in the Cape Coral Fire Department and all those previous 50 years, said Fire Chief Bill Van Helden, "we just want to thank the public for having the opportunity to be able to serve."
The department was honored at City Hall Thursday to mark the important milestone.
The mayor read a proclamation dedicating this week to the Cape Coral Fire Department.
