Lee County volunteers honored
FORT MYERS - They help make your community a better place to live, but they seldom get the credit they deserve.
But on Tuesday, hundreds unsung heroes and heroines got recognition for their contributions as volunteers.
They were the guests of honor at the Senior Friendship Centers' annual RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) luncheon.
Fox 4 anchor Patrick Nolan was - once again - the emcee of the event held at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater in Fort Myers.
In 2011, volunteers served a total 173,514 hours at 30 locations.
The esimated monetary value of their contributions was $3,706,259.
Two individual volunteers, Gary Novatny and Carlene Sharples, put in more than 2,000 hours in 2012.
Two Outstanding Volunteer awards were given: Grace Marinella of SFC Palm Harbor Frienship Cafe and Sharon Childers with the Cape Coral Kidney Foundation Thrift Store.
Volunteers at the Senior Frienship Centers were honored too, including Diane Meteyard, John Benson and Steve Barton.
The Frienship Centers is a United Way Partner agency.
They provide mammograms with funding from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure SWFL which is holding its run/walk this Saturday, March 10th at Coconut Point.
