PUNTA GORDA - Punta Gorda Police confirming new details about the day 27 year old Jessica Smallwood was taken to a Charlotte County hospital. Police now telling Fox 4 Reporter John Rupolo after an exam, Smallwood was determined to have been 7 to 9 months pregnant. They say she told hospital staff she thought she was suffering from blood clots and had no idea she had been pregnant. Neighbors are not buying it.
"How can you not know you're pregnant," said one neighbor.
Police say Smallwood still had the umbilical cord attached to her stomach and there were 2 nylon zip ties bound tight to help stop the bleeding. Police say after searching her home they found a six pound baby girl in a bloody trash bag in a freezer.
"I just cannot fathom this," said another neighbor.
Smallwood is a teacher's aide at the Peace River Elementary has been placed on temporary leave. She hasn't been arrested but neighbors say she should be.
"She just put a baby in the freezer, she should be arrested,' said one neighbor.
Smallwood has three children and the Department of Children and Families say s they have received "prior reports related to this family but nothing involving physical violence,"
A judge has ordered her 3 children to be placed with grandparents until further notice.
