Northern California wildfire halts eavesdropping for aliens

If you weren't already aware, there is a group of scientists in Northern California who spend their days listening for aliens. However, a recent fire briefly halted their cosmic eavesdropping on Tuesday.

"The Eiler Fire, burning some 200 miles north of Sacramento, forced employees at the SETI Institute's Allen Telescope Array to evacuate and temporarily shut down all of their computers, Internet and power," reports CNN. "At SETI -- which stands for Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence -- scientists search the heavens for signs of extraterrestrial life by 'listening' with an array of small satellite dishes."

"We can't listen when all that is down," Seth Shostak, the senior astronomer and director of SETI Research, shares with CNN.

Scientists were later cleared to return to work, however, the immense Eiler Fire has already burned more than 31,000 acres and threatened more than 700 homes in the surrounding area.
