Six weeks into her pregnancy, Michelle Hui, 31, of County Kildare, Ireland, suffered a miscarriage last July. Hui was admitted to Dublin's Rotunda Hospital overnight after five scans to confirm her loss, and given two abortion pills to further prevent infection.
“After I lost the baby I went out with friends and had a bottle and a half of wine. I was devastated – and drank myself silly," Hui shares with UK's Mirror. "I never ever drink that much. I’m not a drinker.” She adds, “The miscarriage and abortion were absolutely horrific."
Just over a week later, she was advised to take a pregnancy test to see if it tested positive, which would reveal any harmful clots that possibly remained. "The test was positive, so she went back to [the] hospital for a D&C (dilation and curettage) – a surgical procedure to remove the contents of the uterus," reports the Mirror.
However, 10 days after the miscarriage, and just before Hui's D&C procedure, her doctor detected a heartbeat. Hui unknowingly had been pregnant with twins, and one survived.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Hui recalls to the Mirror. “Neither could the doctors. But as happy as I was, I was angry they had missed her on the scans.
“They said that with all the blood and clots it must have created shadows so they couldn’t see her," Hui further explains to Mirror. “I’ve been written about in medical journals, and the doctor said that in all his 25 years he has never come across or heard of anything like this.”
Baby Megan was born on February 25, having survived both the miscarriage and abortion.
“She’s our little miracle,” Hui tells the Mirror of Megan. “We were always a strong family, but it has just made us stronger. I wouldn’t have been able to get through it all if it had not been for my husband and my two [older] children."
The Rotunda Hospital has declined to comment in regards to how its medical staff missed signs of twins in the first place, let alone why they administered abortion pills while a baby was still alive inside of Hui.
