'Let It Snow' bumps 'Sleigh Ride' from top of most played holiday songs list

By Phyllis Stark. CREATED Dec 21, 2013

Who knew there was such competition for dominance among decades-old holiday standards? After four years atop the list of most played holiday songs, "Sleigh Ride" relinquished its top place this year to "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!," written in 1945.

The list tracks the most played holiday songs of the season so far, with the tracking period having begun Nov. 1. It was compiled by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), which boasts that its songwriter members penned all 10 of this year's top songs.

"Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" was written by lyricist Sammy Cahn and composer Jule Styne in Hollywood, Calif., in July 1945 on what was reportedly the hottest day of the year. It was first recorded by Vaughn Monroe and has since become a holiday standard that has been re-recorded my numerous artists, including Jewel (2013), Rod Stewart (2012), "Glee's" Darren Criss (2011) and Lady Antebellum (2010). While Dean Martin's version is the most popular, other versions of the tune have been recorded by artists including Frank Sinatra, Herb Alpert, Carly Simon, Michael Bublé, Andy Williams and Boyz II Men.
