'Share The Harvest' Event

CREATED Sep. 6, 2013

Many MSU ecological centers will be open to the public and host seasonal learning activities for all ages as part of a Kellogg Biological Station “Share the Harvest” event.

The event will take place 1-5 p.m. Oct. 6.

The buildings that will be open include MSU’s W.K. Kellogg Manor House, Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, Pasture Dairy Center, W.K. Kellogg Experimental Forest and the Long-term Ecological Research Field Lab.

Share the harvest is intended to celebrate autumn and mark 50 years of aquatic ecology research at KBS. All sites will showcase KBS research related to local streams, ponds, rivers and lakes.

At the Manor House, cereal entrepreneur W.K. Kellogg’s former summer home, visitors can also learn more about Kellogg and local history. Live birds of prey, cider and doughnuts and face painting will be featured at the Bird Sanctuary.

At the Pasture Dairy Center, visitors can view robotic milking machines in action and sample cheese.

The LTER Field Lab will offer a water critters station, farming and food research, and information on the transition from prairie to biofuels. Kellogg Forest trails will be open for exploration.

Admission to all sites is free, but visitors are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Food Bank of South Central Michigan.
