Debate Qualifies Second Team for National Championship

By FOX 47 News. CREATED Feb 26, 2014

Michigan State University Debate Team members Jack Caporal and Quinn Zemel have advanced through the districts and qualified for a spot at the National Debate Tournament.

Caporal and Zemel, both international relations juniors, join Kaavya Ramesh and Tyler Thur to compete at the end of March on behalf of MSU. Universities can only send two teams to the national tournament.

Ramesh, an international relations, Chinese, comparative cultures and politics senior, and Thur, an international relations sophomore, earned an at-large bid for the national tournament and didn’t compete in districts. Ramesh and Thur are members of the Honors College.

“We are delighted to send two teams onto nationals,” said debate head coach Will Repko. “MSU Debate has competed well this season and we hope to cap it off with a national championship.”

Seventy-eight teams will compete at the national tournament, which is held at Indiana University in Bloomington from March 28 to April 1.

The MSU Debate Team is a part of the Honors College. For more information, go to www.debate.msu.edu.
