2013 MSU Help Tackle Food Hunger Food Drives Raises More Than $1,500

CREATED Dec. 17, 2013

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The seventh annual Help Tackle Hunger Food Drive concluded Saturday, Nov. 30, with Spartan fans contributing food and monetary donations to the MSU Student Food Bank. More than 2,100 pounds of food and more than $1,500 were collected from Nov. 4 through the last home Spartan football game of the season.

"The Spartan Nation really kicked it up a notch by coming out in great numbers and donating generously at the Help Tackle Hunger Food Drive this year," said Bill Kost, associate director of Retail Food Services. "The game day turnout was inspiring, as people donated to the MSU Student Food Bank while cheering our Spartans on to a victory over Minnesota. If that's not Spartans Will, I don't know what is.”

This year’s Food Drive topped the previous year’s donation levels by more than $300, marking the third consecutive year of increased donations. This also coincided with MSU Student Food Banks’ 20th anniversary.

“Every year the Help Tackle Hunger Food Drive provides much needed food and monetary support to the MSU Student Food Bank, which allows us to fulfill our mission of addressing food insecurity on campus,” said Nate Smith-Tyge, director of the MSU Student Food Bank. “We couldn’t do our work at the SFB without the entire MSU and East Lansing community coming together. This food drive makes a difference in the lives of thousands of MSU students and we’re deeply grateful.”

The MSU Student Food Bank is a founding member of the College and University Food Bank Alliance, and was the first food bank run by students, for students, when it opened in 1993. The Food Bank is a vital resource for students, distributing more than 50,000 pounds of food annually to more than 4,700 students.

The 2013 Help Tackle Hunger Food Drive was made possible through the partnership of MSU’s Division of Residential and Hospitality Services and the MSU Student Food Bank. For more information visit the Help Tackle Hunger Food Drive at www.fooddrive.msu.edu.
