Spartans and Wolverines Square Off in Breast Cancer Awareness Game

CREATED Feb. 4, 2013

It’s been 364 days since Porsche Poole nailed a game-winning shot with 3.9 seconds left to lift the Spartans to a 65-63 victory the last time these in-state rivals squared off. Michigan State will be hoping for a similar result tonight when they tip-off against Michigan at the Breslin Center at 7:30 pm.

The Spartans will be without Poole this year, who has since graduated, but will have no shortage of offensive firepower this year, averaging over 63 points per game. Leading the way for Michigan State is junior guard Klarissa Bell, who is averaging  over 12 points and 6 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Kiana Johnson and junior forward Annalise Pickrel have also fulfilled major roles thus far through conference play.
The Spartans are red hot against in-state rivals over the past decade, with a record of 36-1 since 2003. Head coach Suzy Merchant has a record of 21-1 all-time against in-state competition. Moreover, the Spartans have won 10 straight against the Maize and Blue.
Play4Kay Event
Tonight’s game will be the annual Play4Kay Pink game, during which the Spartans will don pink jerseys. Students and fans are invited to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. The first 2,000 fans at tonight’s game will receive a pink rally towel.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day
Tonight also commemorates National Girls and Women in Sports day, which is celebrated each year to promote a healthy lifestyle and involvement in sports for women and girls of all ages. All 13 of Michigan State’s women’s athletic teams will be featured during the game, with stations set up around the concourse to meet and greet with many Michigan State athletes.
If you can’t make it out to the Breslin Center tonight, tune in to the game on the Big Ten Network.
