MSU Bakers to Promote “American Heart Month”

CREATED Jan. 29, 2013

EAST LANSING, Mich. – MSU Bakers, Michigan State University’s on-campus bakery, will wear its heart on its sleeve again this year with their annual Heart Month, a portion of all February product sales going to the American Heart Association.

“One of the many advantages MSU Bakers enjoys on campus is to pair something very personal with something that benefits many for a greater good,” said Cindy Baswell, MSU Bakers’ manager. “We appreciate the thoughtfulness of our customers in support of this very worthy organization and its mission.”

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accounting for one in every four deaths yearly. The most common heart disease in the United States is coronary heart disease, which often appears as a heart attack. About every 25 seconds, an American will experience a coronary event, and about one every minute will prove fatal.

The MSU Bakery is bringing back two specials from last year’s campaign: An eight-inch “Brownie Blaster” and the “DIY” Valentine’s Day Cookies, for the Bakers’ more creative customers who wish to decorate their own cookies. The Brownie Blaster sells for $15 and the DIY cookies are available for $15 per dozen. This year, the bakery is also offering two new options: Chocolate Cherry Cupcakes at $12.50 per half dozen and a mix of traditional heart-shaped chocolate and sugar Valentines Cookies for $15 per dozen. Orders can be made online at or by phone at 517-353-9310. Customers may also make donations over and above that associated with their purchase.

MSU Bakers also supports the American Cancer Society each fall with its sales of Gwen’s Bagels. MSU Bakers is a unit of the Division of Residential and Hospitality Services.
