Study Reveals Some Vitamins Do Not Prevent Disease

By FOX 47 News . CREATED Feb 25, 2014

The final report from a government task force says maybe we should stop spending so much money on vitamins.

The study found that most vitamins don't prevent disease. And some can actually increase your risk for disease. The study led by researchers at the US Preventative Services Task Force examined the potential harms and benefits of taking vitamins to prevent chronic disease.

They now say beta-carotene and Vitamin E supplements should not be taken for the sole purpose of preventing cardiovascular disease or cancer. Evidence was inconclusive for most vitamins, but the report found taking beta-carotene can actually raise the risk of lung cancer in people at-risk for the disease.

The report also concluded that taking Vitamin E does not prevent heart disease or cancer.
