Prescription drug abuse is now a top public health concern, and this morning, State Attorney General Bill Schuette will hold a drug abuse summit to discuss the problem.

Tuesday's prescription drug abuse summit will bring together law enforcement agencies, health care providers, and educational institutions, to try to curb unnecessary prescription drug use. The summit will address health care fraud, addiction, and other topics.

US Attorneys Barbara Mcquade and Patrick Miles will address those who attend. Mcquade says prescription drugs have become a currency for many health care providers, allowing them to commit fraud.

Attorney General Bill Schuette will give the keynote address today, and says he hopes a gathering like this can generate ideas that will help reverse this trend. Prescription drug overdoses have tripled in the last 10 years. and more people die from overdosing on prescription drugs than cocaine and heroin combined.

That's why these groups are gathering today. The summit began at 8:30 this morning at Lansing Community College.

We'll have much more on this story tonight on FOX 47.
