Potter Park Zoo Welcomes New Baby Moose

By FOX 47 News . CREATED Jan 22, 2014

Potter Park Zoo has welcomed a new resident - a young Alaskan moose. Her name is Willow, and she was rescued after her mother was struck by a vehicle near Anchorage, AK.

Willow is getting used to her new home in Lansing, after traveling more than 3,800 miles from Alaska, under the care of Potter Park Zoo's Director of Animal Health, Dr. Tara Harrison.

"Traveling with a nearly 200 pound moose brings a whole new meaning to checked baggage," said Dr. Harrison. "The journey went well and she is getting comfortable at the zoo."

Willow is named after her favorite food, and will not be on exhibit at Potter Park until her new enclosure is ready. Her enclosure is scheduled to be completed in 2014.

Potter Park has been working with county parks, Michigan State University, local tree services, and others to keep a steady supply of fresh willow for her to eat. The zoo arranged for willow leaves to be frozen this past fall to have in readiness for her, so she can eat her food of choice through the winter.
