Imagine a school without bullies or cliques, without hall-passes, without a bell sending students class to class and where students are not sitting in rows listening to teachers lecture. These are a just a few advantages of The Nexus Academy of Lansing.
When you first walk in the doors of the Nexus Academy you will notice that it is vastly different from a traditional high school. The campus is small and offers an open design, meaning that there are no doors on offices or in the student-work areas. This way students can easily access the principal, teachers and counselors, and vice-versa. Additionally, it deters from bullying and other kinds of misconduct because everyone can see what the other is doing.
Nexus Academy offers what is called "blended learning." Blended learning combines both online and in-person education. The curriculum includes core subjects such as English, math, science, and social studies, which can be tailored to be advanced Honors or AP courses. A wide variety of electives are also offered, including Art History, Engineering Design, and foreign languages. Students attend some courses in-person with other students, and take other classes online; small on-site classes let teachers provide additional and individualized support, while virtual classes give students variety and give them the option of learning and working at their own pace. Both the online and in-class come together in a college-like setting that promotes positive interaction with peers.
A "typical" student day at Nexus Academy is tailored to each student's individual needs. Each student chooses either a morning (8:00AM-12:00PM) or afternoon (12:30PM-4:30PM) session for four days each week. Students may request extra time spent on campus if they want it, or feel they need it. When students are not on campus, they spend approximately twelve hours a week completing online lessons.
Beyond academia, Nexus Academy seeks to maximize every aspect of a student's potential. By taking a holistic approach to learning students participate in physical fitness during the day, to help them stay focused. On campus, you will find a state-of-the-art fitness facility as well as a personal trainer. Again, each fitness and training program is designed to fit the needs of the student. Additionally, students are given the option to participate in extracurricular activities such as the cross country and track teams.
Nexus Academy high schools are free of charge. Upon enrollment, students are given a laptop to complete their courses and studies. You can enroll your child at any time during the year, provided the school is not at capacity.
