The Michigan State basketball team is headed back to the Elite Eight for the eighth time in Tom Izzo's head coaching career.
The fourth-seeded Spartans beat one-seed Virginia, 61-59, Friday after a last-second three point attempt failed to go in for the Cavaliers. MSU jumped out to an early lead, but Virginia closed the gap, leaving the Spartans with just a four-point lead at the half.
Both teams traded the lead throughout the second half, with Michigan State making key plays in the final minutes.
Branden Dawson continued a stellar post-season, leading the Spartans with 24 points. He also recorded ten rebounds for his six double-double of the season.
Michigan State joins other Big Ten teams Michigan and Wisconsin in the Elite Eight and will play seven-seed Connecticut on Sunday for a spot in the Final Four.
