Michigan Education Trust Launches Statewide 'Welcome Baby' Tax Day Contest
Lansing, MI, April 3, 2014 — Michigan residents will have a reason to look forward to April 15, this year’s Tax Day as the Michigan Education Trust (MET) launches a statewide sweepstake to welcome our most beloved tax deduction – babies. Parents are encouraged to enter the “Welcome Baby” contest for babies born April 15, 2014 through December 31, 2014, for a chance to win a one semester community college contract valued at over $1,500.
“MET wanted a fun way to inform new parents about the importance of starting to save for a child’s education early,” said Robin Lott, executive director for MET. “This is also a great time to remind Michigan taxpayers about the additional benefit of a MET contract - a state income tax deduction.”
Parents, legal guardians or grandparents, who are at least 18 years of age, of a child born in Michigan, from April 15, 2014 through December 31, 2014, have until January 31, 2015 to enter. To enter the sweepstakes and obtain official rules, visit www.setwithmet.com/. One winner will be randomly chosen on February 15, 2015.
MET is Michigan’s Section 529 prepaid tuition program that allows individuals and organizations to pre-purchase credit hours toward future tuition at any of the State’s public colleges and universities by locking in today’s tuition rates.
Parents, grandparents, guardians, other family members and friends can purchase a MET contract for a Michigan student. Approximately 13,000 students are currently using MET benefits to attend college.
MET offers three contract options: Full Benefits, Limited Benefits, and Community College. Contracts can be purchased in semester increments with convenient payment options available. MET purchasers receive a state income tax deduction for the total contract price, including enrollment fees.
MET also offers a Charitable Tuition Program as a way for organizations to purchase up to four years of college tuition for a deserving individual or child at a discounted rate. Organizations can stretch their scholarship dollars with a MET charitable tuition contract.
