Mayor Wants More Power Over BWL in Emergencies

By FOX 47 News. CREATED Jul 26, 2014

More power for the mayor and more voices on the council -- that's Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero's plan for running the Board of Water and Light. Friday he submitted his amendments to the city council. They came after independent reviews of the BWL's slow response to the winter ice storm. They would give the mayor more authority over the BWL during an emergency. Three non-voting members would be also added to the BWL Board of Commissioners, representing East Lansing as well as Delta, Delhi, Meridian and Lansing Townships. "By doing this, we would be one of the few public municipal utilities in the state and country that have outside voices, that have a seat at the table," Mayor Bernero told fox47news.com. The amendments would go on the November ballot for voters to approve if the city council passes them
