Issues Bringing Service Dogs to Some Businesses
FOX 47 News
A family trying to visit the Potter Park Zoo over the weekend was turned away because of their child's service dog.
The boy has autism and uses the service dog specifically to help him from wandering off, WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids reported.
The Potter Park Zoo apologized for the incident and said service dogs are certainly allowed, it was just a matter of an employee not knowing the right protocol. Now they plan on extra training for the whole staff in order to better handle these situations.
But the zoo isn't the only place that families with service dogs have run into problems. Many businesses aren't sure of the rules, and might be incorrectly turning people away.
FOX 47's Shannon Kantner is talking with the zoo to hear what their training will include, and what service dog organizations say about the problems they encounter.
