'Bust The Bus' Food Drive
For the sixth consecutive year, bus operators, maintenance workers and mechanics from Local 1039 of the Amalgamated Transit Union will join forces with Kroger and the Greater Lansing Food Bank to wage war against hunger.
The local, representing more than 200 union employees at the Capital Area Transportation Authority, will collect nonperishable food items and cash donations Saturday, April 19th from 8:00AM until 3:00PM at two Kroger locations: 4884 Marsh Road in Okemos and 1550 W. Lake Lansing Road in East Lansing. A 40-foot CATA bus will serve as a collection vehicle at each participating Kroger store.
"Many of us don't realize the tens of thousands of individuals in our community are far too often forced to choose between eating and taking care of critical necessities," explained Katie Kelley, spokesperson for the local. "Utility bills, medical expenses and rent can leave households with little to nothing for food."
Kroger shoppers are encouraged to purchase nonperishable groceries and turn in their donations to the CATA bus. Area residents may also drop off donations at either Kroger locations.
Last year, Local 1039 raised 1,300 pounds of food and $1,400 in cash donations.
"We'd like to beat that this year," Kelley added. "We're not winning the war, but we're putting up a pretty good fight."
Proceeds will benefit the Greater Lansing Food Bank.
