Anti-Illegal-Immigration Groups Take a Stand

By FOX 47 News. CREATED Jul 19, 2014

As part of the National Day of Protesting Against Illegal Immigration Reform, Amnesty and Border Surge, several anti-illegal-immigration groups banded together in Lansing to make their voices heard.

They started their protest in a member's front yard on the corner of Kalamazoo and Pennsylvania Streets.

Stacey Connell, a member of the anti-illegal-immigration group, The Three Percenters, was passionate about the cause. "We will not falter, we will not go silent in the night. We will not be quiet about this. We will not be quiet about the illegal immigration, We will not be quiet about our country falling apart."

Connell and other anti-illegal-immigrant demonstrators are against illegal immigrant children coming to Michigan. About twenty minutes into their protest, a few pro-immigration groups arrived.

By Any Means Necessary group member Jose Alvarenga explained, "This violates every human right law anywhere in the world, and we're gonna defend the rights of those children no matter what. And we're gonna shut down any racist cowards who oppose and want to send those children back to their death."

To make sure things didn't get out of hand, the Lansing Police Department was on the scene. With tensions high, PIO officer Rob Merrit said the law enforcement presence was necessary. "Not only are we going to have people that are making sure they're keeping the peace - the protesters and anti-protesters, but we want to make sure that we have traffic and public safety is number one."

Eventually, the anti and pro immigrant groups took to the Capitol building to continue their protests.

"We've come here to make our point and to silence them, and we're gonna stand here until they go home," said Alvarenga.

Protesters at the Capitol said they'll be there again tomorrow.
