MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Nine deer were taken by a group of specially selected hunters on Meridian Township land this weekend. September 21 & 22 marked the first days of the township's managed hunt on township property. The township is trying to reduce the overpopulation of deer in the area, that often leads to damaged property as well as car accidents.

The hunt on township land is not open to the public. Hunters taking part are approved by township officials, following some strict standards. The hunters are using bow only, shooting down from tree stands.

The venison from the donated deer is distributed through the food banks at the Okemos Community Church and Haslett Community Church.
