Medicaid Expansion: Possible Vote Nears

Medicaid Expansion: Possible Vote Nears

By FOX 47 News. CREATED Jun 12, 2013

LANSING-- The House's Michigan Competitiveness Committee is expected to have another hearing Wednesday, on the House Bill 4714.

The House Republican proposal no longer includes a strict, 48-month time limit on receiving Medicaid benefits for able-bodied adults. Instead, adults between the ages of 21 and 64 added through the expansion would have two options after four years. They could buy government subsidized insurance through the planned federal heath insurance exchange, or they could remain on Medicaid by paying more out-of-pocket costs.

Medicaid expansion is a major component of the federal health care law commonly known as Obamacare. Roughly 470,000 more Michigan adults could be covered through the expansion if the state accepts it.
