Homeless Veterans Receive Free Services

CREATED May. 22, 2013

Volunteers of America will pay tribute to local homeless veterans today at the 10th annual "Capital Area Stand Down for Homeless Veterans."

A hot lunch, free haircuts, legal services, and even employment assistance will be offered.

The goal is to help veterans get back on their feet. A "stand down" is a tradition that dates back to early war times when soldiers were given a chance to rest from combat.

According to US data, veterans make up about thirteen percent of homeless adults, and while vets may have fallen on hard times, the goal of today's event is to lift their spirits, and give them a hand up.

In addition to the free hair cuts and employment assistance, free dental screenings will be available, as well as housing referrals and counseling services.

A local boy scout troop will also be handing out blankets to veterans.

The event at Adado Riverfront Park runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It's also open to homeless non-veterans as well.
