As the weather gets nicer, con artists are sure to show up at your door and offer home improvement work, with no intention of ever getting it done. The reports are already coming in. So here's a few things to keep in mind if someone comes knocking on your door. Make sure they are licensed with the state, and have a good reputation with the better business bureau. Ask for references of previous customers, to get an idea about the quality of work they did. Never commit to anything on the spot, or give money up front, if they're legit, they'll be happy to come back another time.
You can also learn to do the work yourself. The "Greater Lansing Housing Coalition" offers free weekly classes for homeowners on things like screen repairs, waterproofing your basement, fixing your eaves, even tiling a backsplash. The "Hero" classes take place Tuesday and Thursdays, from six to eight. You'll need to register ahead of time.
