Haven House celebrates 30 years of serving the greater Lansing area
FOX 47 News
As part of a continuing commitment to serve the Greater Lansing homeless community, Haven House celebrates their 30th Anniversary by launching a targeted outreach campaign designed to help double the number of families they assist from 150 to 300 per year. “The “$30 for 30 Campaign” invites the community to be part of the solution to homelessness,” explained Executive Director Angela Mayeaux. “With donations of just a dollar a day, Haven House can generate the funding needed quickly to help more families.”
Located in East Lansing, Haven House provides emergency housing and support services for one-and two-parent families with children. The shelter helps families who are homeless prepare for permanent housing by developing and promoting self-sufficiency, stability, and financial responsibility.
According to Mayeaux, Haven House turns away as many as 2,100 people in need of shelter each year. Funds raised by the 30th Anniversary campaign will generate necessary revenue to help expand Haven House’s ‘Rapid Rehousing’ program – a program designed to assist families in transition by helping them with security deposits and other move-in costs – and provide Haven House the means to double the number of families they assist each year.
“To reach our goal requires us to raise $750,000 over the next three years,” added Mayeaux. “Members of our community can visit our Web Site www.HavenHouseEL.org to pledge their $30 a month for 30 months donation – that equates to just one dollar a day. And, in addition, we are inviting businesses to become 30th Anniversary sponsors.”
Dean Transportation became the first “$30 for 30 Campaign” sponsor. “We have always been able to count on Kellie Dean to help where our families are concerned,” stated Mayeaux. Other business sponsors include StayDry Basement Waterproofing who is sponsoring half of the $3,000 basement repair, and Hager Fox Heating and Air Conditioning who is donating two new attic fans to cool the residents’ rooms in the summer.
Community support is vital to helping Haven House serve as a key player in the solution to homelessness. Residents and former residents praise the program and its ability to provide assistance when none can be found. In the words of a former resident, “I didn’t think I could do it, but you never gave up having faith in me. I’m moving into a new home, because you pushed and believed in me.” Another resident said, “I am happy that Haven House has provided a safe environment for me and my children. The staff at Haven House is really patient with me and my kids.”
