With Video: VFW Worker Accused of Sexually Abusing Boys Found Dead

CREATED Oct. 21, 2012 - UPDATED: Oct. 22, 2012

The Eaton Rapids woman who was arrested earlier this week and charged with sexually abusing two boys at a VFW home was visited at her home again by police Saturday night. They believe she committed suicide.

"The ambulance came. We saw them take the body out of the house," said a neighbor who wanted to stay anonymous.

The neighbor happens to be one of many in the neighborhood who used to live at the VFW National Home for Children where 44-year-old Misty Botke worked, and was accused of sexually abusing two boys living there between 1998 and 2006.

A disturbing end to the story which shocked them all, is leaving the community shaken.

"The emergency people came and left. No sirens," said Dave Walter, who lives nearby. He says police responded to the house around 8 p.m. Saturday night. "Maybe three or four (police) cars...They were here for a long time."

Before Botke's alleged suicide, she was scheduled to be back in court this week for her preliminary exam; facing seven counts of criminal sexual conduct. That's when she would have been hearing testimonies, and seeing evidence brought against her.

Instead, Botke will never be ruled as guilty or not, leaving much of the community and her husband without closure: "He was screaming, I shouldn't have left her," said the anonymous neighbor.

We're still working to get more details from police, including where the abuse investigation will go from here.
