Pups paraded around the Capitol Tuesday, hoping to grab the attention of lawmakers.
Puppy Mill Awareness of Southeast Michigan wants lawmakers to schedule hearings about legislation that would put standards in place for large-scale breeders.
Organizers say that's half the battle, as people need to change their way of thinking, too.
"We want families who are looking for a pet - we want them to go the shelter and adopt an animal there instead. If there's no demand for these puppies, they would go out of business on their own," said Pam Sordyl, of the Puppy Mill Awareness of Southeast Michigan organization.
Another piece of legislation -- known as the Puppy Lemon Law -- would protect people who buy sick dogs from breeders and pet stores.
