MSU Clinches Share, Wants Outright Title

By FOX 47 News. CREATED Feb 27, 2012

After breezing past the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday night 62-34, Michigan State couldn't have anticipated that clinching at least a portion of the Big Ten title would also happen in the same weekend.

But Michigan and Ohio State were both stunned by the visiting Purdue Boilermakers and Wisconsin Badgers this past weekend, and subsequently, Michigan State's first place status was propped up a little higher.

A win at Indiana Tuesday night would let the Spartans be the outright champs of the Big Ten, but they would also have a shot in their final home game against Ohio State this Sunday to clinch it. Either way, the worst outcome for the Spartans would be having to share the title.

Tom Izzo and his Spartans learned of Ohio State's home loss during Sunday practice, and Izzo admits it feels odd to clinch a part of the Big Ten title without his team on the court.

Still, the team has known that their destiny rested in their own hands in these final games, and now it will be a matter of focusing on winning the title outright.

Beyond that, Izzo and his team are looking towards the future: the Big Ten tournament, and hopefully a #1 seed in March.
