Ingham County Road Commission Managing Director Bill Conklin says his road crews are itching for some more snow before the winter is over; missing the overtime pay common for this time of year.
So far, not many from the day shift had to stay late to monitor the evening commute, so tonight it will be those on the over-night shift calling the shots.
"Our night crew keeps an eye on things and calls in additional drivers as necessary in the morning," explained Conklin. And if it snows as predicted, they will finally be calling in their entire crew of about 35 drivers.
"They'll typically be out at 5:00 a.m. to make sure that it's done for rush hour tomorrow morning," he continued. Conklin tells us that so far in 2012, they have come in below their salt and overtime budget, but not a lot due to consistently icy roads.
"We prefer a milder winter; it saves obviously budget for our summer surface maintenance program." But says he still has to make decisions to save on the overtime budget; just in case we're in for some surprise winter storms before the spring.
Because of this budgeting mixed with the timing of this storm being so close to the weekend, he warns: "We typically don't get the subdivisions cleaned up until the following Monday."
But if these roads are particularly hazardous, there will be crews working Friday evening through Saturday.
