Restructuring Recommendations for Lansing School District

Restructuring Recommendations for Lansing School District

By FOX 47 News. CREATED Feb 1, 2012

Tuesday night, the Lansing School Board held a special meeting where the administration presented restructuring recommendations for 2012-2014.

"In general I thought it was a good plan. I think there's more we need to learn before we're ready to say let's go," said Lansing School Board President Myra Ford.

The district's chief operations officer recommended closing Willow and Reo elementary schools before the next school year, as well as re-configuring Otto and Pattengill as fourth through eighth grade schools and re-configuring Post Oak, Cumberland, Gier Park and Sheridan Road as pre-kindergarten through third grade schools.

The administration recommended closing a high school and another elementary school before the start of the 2013-2014 school year.

"It is a fact in Lansing that if we were to restructure in an optimal manner that it is quite possible that the high school students we have can be accommodated in two buildings," said Lansing School District Chief Operations Officer Brian Ralph.

However, the district has not made a formal recommendation on whether to close Sexton or Eastern high school. The COO's report suggests an October or November deadline for the decision.

In 2013-2014, the administration also recommended re-configuring Attwood, Cavanaugh, Kendon, Lyons, Forest View, Lewton and Averill as pre-kindergarten through third grade schools, re-configuring Elmhurst, Mt. Hope and North as fourth through sixth grade schools, re-configuring Riddle as a pre-kindergarten through sixth grade school and re-configuring Gardner as a seventh through eighth grade school.

According to the administration, restructuring will help the district save about $2.2-$2.3 million.
